Release Mates

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £250 to Release Mates for 5x android tablets.
Release Mates is a team of prison leavers based at HMP Lancaster Farms, dedicated to supporting individuals upon their release. Their work begins in the departure lounge, where they provide immediate access to refreshments, clothing, food, toiletries, and pre-loaded SIM cards.

The team offers assistance with navigating benefits, understanding probation requirements, and accessing essential services. They also support individuals in securing accommodation, arranging transport, and addressing other practical needs.
For those referred with specific challenges—such as addiction, mental health issues, disabilities, homelessness, or vulnerability—Release Mates delivers a more intensive wrap-around service. This includes accompanying individuals from the departure lounge to essential appointments (including probation, the job centre, chemist, and bank) and then to their accommodation in Lancashire. They continue to provide support and guidance tailored to individual needs, ensuring a successful transition back into the community.
Release Mates strives to offer hope and practical support to people leaving prison, empowering them to rebuild their lives and become productive members of society.
The grant award funded five tablets for the departure lounge at HMP Lancaster Farms, providing a vital resource for men on the day of their release. The tablets will help them plan travel, start Universal Credit claims, search for accommodation, and begin job hunting—offering essential support for a smoother transition back into the community.
